The quaint, quirky, and cute Life/Farming Simulator is a genre that has been shaken to its core and left reeling. The release of Stardew Valley back in 2016 not only reinvigorated the stagnating genre but also set it on a course for destruction. Many developers try to emulate Stardew Valley’s success by just having Stardew Valley – just with something hastily stitched onto its barely breathing body. Sort of like a misunderstood Shelluvian monstrosity, but with dead grandparents and weeds everywhere. Monster Harvest is one of these amalgamations. They added in monster-catching…for some reason.
In Monster Harvest, you play as one of four nameable characters that are of different genders and skin tones. You have come to take over your uncle’s farm as he has become busy with the study of slimes and what he calls “planimals” – crops mutated by slime into animal hybrids. These planimals are companions who will follow you and assist in your farm. They can also be taken into battle in the slime caves.
I enjoyed being able to build a relationship with the town residents, but that amounted to little more than giving them a flower every day. The slow-build of the game means that players have to trust that the late-game will have some payoffs, but it’s just not enough to keep you hanging on until then.
NPCs have two functions in Monster Harvest: providing generic one-liners or becoming shopkeepers. I haven’t experienced any side- or even fetch-quests that expand more about someone’s backstory. This is a world that has a lot of different bodies moving around but very little substance.
But it’s not the graphics that are surprisingly impressive. This is a fairly solid farming sim. It comes with all the trimmings you’d expect. You play as a disgruntled youth who has rejected the notions and demands of city life. Just as you are about to fall into an abyss of mundanity, you get a letter from your uncle – surprisingly not dead – and are given the chance to escape hell on earth and live a life of satisfyingly difficult hard labor in a rural town.
Monster Harvest has some beautiful strengths. The art is stunning. Planimal Point is a place I could spend forever running through. I’m a sucker for pixel art and there is plenty to behold in this game. The character designs are also varied and interesting, both for the planimals and the townspeople.
The freedom to play the game how you want, whether it’s as an explorer or a rancher or both, means a lot in the way of accessibility and player choice. Most smaller titles have a focused expression of the player agency, so seeing that Monster Harvest granted that volition to the players is fantastic.
Overall Monster Harvest is an average entry into a genre that, for the most part, is oversaturated with average entries. It tries to emulate the genre patriarch and does a respectable job in terms of the farming mechanics, overall feel, and presentation. The town, the folk, and the whole monster thing hold the game back, however. There is very little reason to invest your time and money into such a temporal vacuum when that game is merely adequate.

With a physical E3 once again ruled out this year, and the show's digital plans still uncertain, all eyes are on the big publishers to see how they might continue to fill the void left by the long-running industry show. And according to a new report, Ubisoft is currently prepping a "massive" showcase event of its own, where it could reveal the unannounced likes of a new Prince of Persia game and an Immortals Fenix Rising sequel.
The idea of Ubisoft having the Immortals: Fenyx Rising sequel in production comes from Tom Henderson, one of the more reliable gaming industry leakers. Henderson previously leaked information about The Division: Heartland, as well as a wide variety of other projects, and he has already been established as a generally trustworthy source on the topic. Granted, Henderson didn't have much to share about the Immortals sequel, other than the fact that it's being made and that Ubisoft is currently in the process of hiring more staff to work on it.
One other game mentioned that sounds like it could be in with a chance for a Switch release, is a new 2.5D Prince of Persia game, apparently taking inspiration from the Ori series. This is notably a different game to the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake.
A second Prince of Persia title is reportedly in the works at Ubisoft, with Ubisoft Montpellier being involved in the project. The game was described as taking "inspiration from Ori" and will be a 2.5D game.
Additional details on this title were slim, but I hope to be able to reveal more shortly. Nonetheless, it does seem that Ubisoft is actively working on a second Prince of Persia title.
As for when these project might be formally announced, that's currently unclear. Some games, such as The Division Heartland, are expected in the next 12 months while others are seemingly much further afield. However, Henderson seems to believe at least some of these may surface in the aforementioned "massive" showcase event Ubisoft has in the works.
